Before Earthquake Preparations:
- Fasten your shelves securely to walls and place heavy objects on lower shelves.
- Instigate an emergencies plan for survival and meeting.
- Store breakable items in low, closed cabinets to limit the amount of rubble and delay the injuries and casualties of people from exposed broken material on the floor.
- Have disaster supplies easily accessible.
- Hang mirrors, pictures and clocks away from seats or beds.
- Brace hanging light fixtures.
- Repair any cracks in walls and foundations as the cracks are flaws in the wall and make the wall weaker, therefore less likely to hold in the case of an earthquake.
- Store dangerous and flammable liquids, such as pesticides or sprays, on low, latched cabinets.
- Identify and maintain safe places in each room and outside such as strong furniture and inside walls, away from electrical lines and trees.
- Ensure that all family members are aware of safe practices in case of emergency.
- All citizens must understand the causes, processes and effects of this natural disaster and ensure that all citizens understand how best to respond in an earthquake.
